Hugh Barton
Hugh Barton was born on 8 January 1766. He was the son of William Barton and Grace Massy He married Anne Johnston, daughter of Nathaniel Weld Johnston, on 17 December 1791.2 He died on 25 May 1854 at age 88.
He was imprisoned as an alien during the reign of terror between 1793 and 1794 but by the connivance of his wife he escaped to Ireland. Daniel Guestier managed the Bordeaux business in his absence. This partnership has continued from father to son from 1802 to the present day. He lived in 1828 at Grove House, Fethard, County Tipperary, Ireland. He acquired a large fortune in Bordeaux with which he purchased the Straffan House, Straffan, County Kildare, Ireland, and other lands, including Cootehall, County Roscommon in 1831, and the Château Langoa and a portion of the adjacent property of Leoville, both in the parish of St. Julien Médoc, near Bordeaux. He held the office of High Sheriff of County Kildare in 1840. He lived at Battle Abbey, Battle, Sussex, England
