Chagall's daughter Ida married art historian Franz Meyer in January 1952, and feeling that her father missed the companionship of a woman in his home, introduced him to Valentina (Vava) Brodsky, a woman from a similar Russian Jewish background, who had run a successful millinery business in London. She became his secretary, and after a few months agreed to stay only if Chagall married her. NICE, France, Aug. 11, 1994  — Ida Chagall, the only child of the artist Marc Chagall and the organizer of several expositions of his work, died on Wednesday at her summer home at Brulat du Castellet in southern France. She was 78. 

The cause was cancer, the Chagall museum in Nice said today.

Ms. Chagall was born in Vitebsk, Russia, her father's hometown, to the painter and his first wife, Bella Rosenfeld. She was well known in Parisian art circles and organized exhibitions of Chagall's paintings in several French museums. In 1990 she gave the Israel Museum in Jerusalem 103 works by her father, including drawings he made for two books written by her mother.

She married twice and had three children by her second husband, Franz Meyer, a former director of the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland.
