GEDCOM Note

Purportedly, James Davis Jr. was son of U.S. immigrant James Davis Sr. (born in England) and his Cherokee wife Mary Ann Treadle, who died young. I don't know if James Davis Sr. married again.

This is a story taken from ancestry.com. I don't know how much is true.

James Davis the Immigrant (from ancestry.com)

James Davis Sr. (b. about 1720) was born in England of wealthy parents who made their money in the "trade". His parents tried several times to have their son trained in some productive trade without success. They bound him over to a ship's captain destined for America. He arrived in America in 1740 according to Boyer's "Ships Passengers Lists for 1538 to 1825". He jumped ship and later married a Cherokee Indian girl named Mary Ann Treadle (b. 1725). Together they had a son named James Davis Jr., born about 1760. (father of Joseph and William Alfred "Alf" Davis)
The parents in England died and James Sr. was heir. He and his wife attempted the journey to England to claim the estate but Mary fell gravely ill and the trip was never made. The estate was never claimed.
James Davis Jr. married a woman whose name is unknown. Together they had a son named Joseph, born August 2, 1804, place unknown. When Joseph was a toddler James Jr. (his dad) began walking from town to town to find work carrying Joseph on his back. When he arrived in Irwin County, Ga., he was hired to work on the Ocmulgee River Road that was to run along the river from Irwin County to Pulaski County. The widow Peterson took Joseph in and cared for him while James Jr. (his dad) was away. James later married the widow Elizabeth Peterson on July 20, 1820. Together they had one son, William Alfred Davis (half-brother of Joseph Davis, later Rev Joseph Davis of Wilcox County, Ga.).
