About James L. Walker
James L. Walker was a native of Scotland. Born in 1820 and was an orphan at age 8. He became a merchant marine, sailing around the world twice. He was a gold miner in Alaska. He eventually landed in Lucas Co., Iowa in 1858. He married Mary Ann Stevenson on March 25, 1859 in Medina Co., Ohio.
They homesteaded near Lucas, Iowa in the spring of 1859, transforming the wild prairies into fertile acres. James and Mary Ann were highly respected and esteemed by their neighbors and friends. They had four children, two died in infancy. James Anderson and Margaret Jane were taught by their parents in the old fashioned virtues of honesty and industry, growing up amid pioneer conditions. They enjoyed the primitive educational advantages of the period, attending the schools in the neighborhood of their father's farm.
