James Armstrong was born About 1645 in Brooksboro Parish, Fermanagh, Ulster, Ireland, and died 1 May 1745 in Paxtang, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. He was the son of Capt Edward Armstrong and Margaret "Mary" Maguire.

He married Jane Campbell, daughter of Margaret Lawder and Colin Campbell. She was born About 1665 in Enniskillin, Fermanagh, Ulster, Ireland, and died About 1745 in Lancaster, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States.

Children of James /Armstrong, Sr. and Jane Campbell include:

  1. James Armstrong was born About 1690 in Brookboro, Fermanagh, Ulster, Ireland, and died 1 May 1745 in Chester, Pennsylvania, United States. Married: Mary Campbell

Notes on wife:

Not a daughter of Colin Campbell of Blythswood & Margaret Lauder according to Burke, Bernard, Sir.  A genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry of Great Britain & Ireland 6th ed. London : Harrison 1879. Vol I. page 258.

wife seen as Jane Ross Beaty.

wife seen as Jean Marie (Mary Jane) Campbell

Note about children

We have two James Armstrongs here, a father and a son, both born in Brookeborough, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, both married Campbells, and both died in Paxtang, PA. This lends itself to an epic case of inter-generational confusion.

Many children that are said to be the sons and daughters of the elder James probably are in fact the children of the younger James. The trick is figuring out which is which.

One notes a very large gap in the birthdates of these children; while the eldest is born in 1684, there is a noted cluster in the first quarter of the 1700's. These children probably belong to the younger James.

Note about date of death

A death date of May 1, 1745 is given for many of the Armstrong males related to James. This would lead to James being over 100 at death - which while possible is very unlikely. More likely that this date applies to his son, or it is a date on a will and we've lost the "before" or "after" part.

For sure, James b. 1642 didn't live that long, so I've removed that date from his profile.

From: Jim Ward * EMC.Ver #2.5.02 ] -- I looked up an ABB article by Jim Protz, last known address 5875 Glacier Hywy #20, Juneau, Alaska 99801. He has James Armstrong mrd. Mary Yeates. They lived in Annandale, on the border of Scotland. He faced persecution for participating in the 1666 Battle of Portland Hills and escaped to Ballynahiah, Co. Down, Ire.

James' son was James who m. married Mary Campbell 26 Apr 1704. Children were John, William and probably Thomas believed to be our lines first descendant in Augusta Co. This is your line and he cites the book THE REV. JOHN CRAIG, HIS DESCENDANTS AND ALLIED FAMILIES, by Lillian Craig. Jim later determined his line to be from William Armstrong of Carter's Valley's son James of Caney Creek near Rogersville. Still think Lucille Goodwin is the authority on this family

Note - I'm not one to change history or the Chronicles, but there seems to be mistakes in the Rutledge Files, WLA History, etc.

It is very easy to get the Chronicles mixed up, which seems to be the case and has continued on and on.It seems logical that William-1682 is a brother of James-1664, and not another son named William, which would make 2 sons named William, as there is only 18 years difference in the ages of James & William. The Chronicles state that James married Jane in1693, that was eleven years after William -1682 was born, while the Chronicles do not show a previous marriage of James. It doesn't seem logical for James to have 2 sons named the same, with the second William who the Chronicles say was born in 1695. Compiled by W .L.A.(Az.)

“Chronicles of the Armstrongs” (1902). Page 375. < Archive.Org >

The following statement was made by Edward Arm- strong, the present possessor of Terwinney:

Edward from the Border, son of Christie's Will, came from Brookboro to Terwinney about 1650 to take possession of land that was left either to him or his father for military service. After clearing the land and building the house which is standing to-day, he went back to Brookboro, the place of the first homestead. His son, James of Brookboro, succeeded him in the possession of Terwinney. James of Brookboro had the following children of whom we know: Edward of Terwinney, Andro, a sister who married Lieutenant Graydon, John, afterwards Major-General John Armstrong of Pennsyl- vania, William, and George. John's oldest brother, [Edward] who was heir-apparent to Terwinney, died in 1744, fighting in Pennsylvania, leaving a young son in Ireland called Gentle James.
