In 1911 Jim Breheny started to play Aussie Rules at Matong. He became a well known Australian Rules footballer, selected as representative of SW. Districts in the Country - City competition in Sydney 1912. In 1913 season, playing at the half-forward position, he kicked 66 goals for Matong. During 1914 he joined the police force. Constable James Augustus Breheny, was staioned with the police at Liverpool. October 1915 he resigned. He had suffered an injury in the city. Leaving Liverpool he took up farming in the Ganmain district (Riverina).
The following year, back playing football, he captained Marrar, playing with that team two years in succession. In 1920 he joined Matong team. Jim was captain for three out of the four years he was with Matong. A great high marker, his skill winning him the name of "The Matong Aeroplane".
Weather and worker shortages took their toll. James Augustus Breheny, of Matong, farmer, filed in 1923 for bankrupsy. For some time he worked as a telephone linesman.
1924/25/26, he captained a Wagga team. James Breheny lived in Leeton for nearly eight years, in his last 6½ years he was in failing health.
James Augustus Breheny died aged 42 at home in Waratah Street, Leeton, after a lingering illness. Jim Breheny was survived by a wife and eight children
Buried Catholic portion of the Leeton cemetery, chief mourners at the funeral were the widow and children; brothers Jack (Wagga) Joe [Phillip] sisters, Mrs. J. Ryan (Ariah Park), Miss J. Breheny (Wagga), uncle, Mr. A. McInnes (Matong), father-in-law, Mr. T. Campbell (Wagga); sister-in law, Mrs. Taylor (Wagga); brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Hurst (Wagga); brothers-in-law, Messrs J. Hall (Matong), A. Jackson (Ganmain), T. Campbell, jnr., and G. Campbell (Wagga),
The pall bearers were Messrs Jack and Joe Breheny (brothers) and Messrs Tom and Gordon Campbell (brothers-in-law).
