About Johann George Mettler
NB: The death date found everywhere on the Internet for Johann George Mettler is probably incorrect. Its source was a transcription of a translation of a bible written in Dutch owned by Enoch Mettler Davis of Millstone, NJ and published in the Somerset County Historical Quarterly, Volume 6, 1917, pp 124 - 126. The current location of the bible is unknown. It is not at the Somerset or Hunterdon Historical Societies, nor is it at the Genealogical Society of New Jersey at Rutgers. Without seeing the bible, we cannot know if the translation and transcription is correct, who owned the bible originally, and whether the date of George Mettler's death was recorded concurrent with his death or by a later generation from memory. Entered in MEDIA are NJ Supreme Court records related to the 1753 Ejectment Notice to George Medlar of Hunterdon County and 1755 records for trespassing and cutting timber. The repository for these documents is the NJ Archives in Trenton, NJ. It is highly unlikely that there were two men by the same name and old enough to be heads of household in the 1745 - 1755 time period in sparsely populated Hunterdon County. Therefore, it is likely that Johann George Mettler died in or after 1755. RJ
