Johann Conrad was the son of Johann 'Hans' Bernhard Reber (chr. Jan 15 1670 Langensbold-Dec 16 1743 Langenselbold) and Anna Maria Ahl (May 26 1685, Langenselbold, Hesse, Germany). His mother was 37 years old when he was born. Some people have inserted an extra generation and claim he is the son of his brother Johannes (1705-1784) and Johanna Magdalena Hahn. His brother Johannes Reber also came to Pennsylvania. His brother's infant son Ludwig Friedrich Reber died on the way to America. Hans was the son of Daniel Reber (1628- Dec 17 1702, Langenselbold) and Marie Ronpel (1633 Gondsroth, Germany- July 28 1700 Germany), who were married in October 1655 in Langenselbold. Anna was the daughter of Valentine Ahl of Germany. Her mother died in childbirth. Her parents were married on Jan 5 1701/02 in Langenselbold, Hesse, Germany. Daniel was the son of Herman Reber (1604- before 1655). Marie was the daughter of Conrad Ronpel.A booklet entitled, "The Genealogy of the Reber Family" does not mention Johann Conrad. It discusses descendants of Johann Bernhard and his son Johannes (1705). The book mentions that Johann Bernhard emigrated from Germany to Philadelphia on September 9 1738 on the ship Snow Two Sisters from Rotterdam. It also mentions that Johann Bernhard had three brothers, Hans Reber, Johann Conrad Reber, and Michael Reber. In 1882 records of the Reber family going back to 1563 were available at the Evangelical Church in Langenselbold (according to descendant James T. Reber of Reading, Pennsylvania who visited).
Johann immigrated to Philadelphia on the ship Ann Galley, arriving on September 27 1746. He was married to Anna Margaret Conrad, who died sometime after 1796. They were married in Pennsylvania and were the parents of the following known children all baptized at Blue Mountain Church (there is some variation in the list of children found by different genealogists):
1-Conrad Reber (chr. Dec 10 1751- Sept 7 1823, Lake Township, Stark County, Ohio) founded Rebersburg in Centre County, Pennsylvania; married Mary Margret Pontius (abt 1762-abt 1835) 2-Anna Catharine Reber (chr. April 10 1753) 3-John George Reber (chr. Jan 23 1754- Jan 16 1834 Berks Co.) 4-John Jacob Reber (chr. Feb 4 1760- Sept 19 1843 Strausstown) Rev. War Veteran 5-Anna Margaretha Reber* (chr. Dec 15 1761- April 6 1838 Berks Co.) married Johannes Klein (1758-1824) 6-Magdalena Reber (Aug 24 1762-Sept 2 1845 OH), married John William Emerick 7-Elizabeth Reber (March 18 1766- ?)
According to Roger Cramer's family tree on Rootsweb, Johann served as a Private in the Revolutionary War in Capt. Henry Shepler's 3rd Company (1777-1779). However, there is no D.A.R. patriot record for him. There may be a Sons of the Revolution lineage for him.
Date of Administration Papers for his estate~ September 24 1796
[burial information is from Henry Strauss~ Tulpehocken Settlement Historical Society]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Anna Margaretha Reber and Johannes Klein were the parents of at least fourteen children. Their oldest daughter was Saloma/Salma 'Sarah' Kline, who married Daniel Spayd/Spayde/Spath and moved to Lebanon County. She used the name Sarah on at least one census. The Miesse family tree on Rootsweb has the most comprehensive list of children published online for Johannes and Margaretha (no birthdates are known for the first six names listed-Sarah is believed to be Salome Kline Spayd, born about 1898, as both Sarah and Sally were nicknames for the given name Salome- pronounced Sal-o-may).
