Possible Family History #1 - 1750 Could be a descendant of the "Bunowen Geoghegans" - descendants of 17th century Art Geoghegan of Castletown, Westmeath. The Galway Geoghegans took over the confiscated O'Flaherty lands at Bunowen. They later sold property to the Blake family.

Possible Family History #2 ("Galway History Note) - 1820 Doon Hill, Ballyconneely, Galway The half of the Geoghegan family related to John David Geoghegan became Protestant in order to retain the family estates. In 1807, this half of family under John Augustus took surname O'Neill. The half that stayed Catholic continued to use Geoghegan.

Possible Family History #3 - 1830 Doon Hill, Ballyconneely, Galway Family estates inherited by MP John Augustus O'Neill in 1830. After the famine, he had money trouble, & sold the castle and much of the land to Valentine Blake of Towerhill in 1852. Blake had Carnmore Estate in Galway & land in County Mayo & western Cork.

Family History Note #4 1851 • Oughterard, County Galway A branch of the Geoghegan family of Galway have been owners of the Glengowla silver mine in Oughterard, County Galway, since 1851. The Holleran, McDonough, and Cloonan families had members who worked the mine.
