The listed birth date was obtained from the death certificate but his birth date has been reported to have been as early as 1788, putting his age at death to be 134 years old. There is a lot of information about one of Ky. oldest citizens on the internet. He was featured as the oldest living Kentuckian at the 1919 Ky. State Fair. And in an interview he stated that his earliest recollection was "the news coming over the moutains that the father of our country had died", this of course would have been George Washington and the date would have been 1799. Though not listed as famous he was an important character in the early history of S.E. Ky. John Shell is buried in the White Oaks area.

Father: Samuel Schell, a gun maker.

Children: William by 1st marriage & Albert by 2nd marriage.
