JOHN HUNTLEY

Birth: (1a) 1625. (1) No record can be found for the 1625 birth date. In the early records his name is spelled Huntly (without the "e"). (5,7) Some authorities presume he was of the Huntley Sept of the Clan Gordon, whose estates are located in the town of Huntley, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Sir George GORDON, Earl of Huntley, was associated with the founding of the Virginia Company in 1613 and there are various families of HUNTLEYs who settled in Northumberland and Westmoreland Cos., VA. Other authorities say that the family descends from the Gloucestershire family. (7) Had a wife in 1647 and was in business, indicating that he was of age and perhaps in his mid-twenties, so therefore b. between 1622 and 1626.

Marriage to __ __: (1) Jane was his 2nd wife. (5) Had an unknown first wife. (7) John PEASE deposed 1 Jul 1679 that 29 or 30 years ago John HUNTLEY lived on HANNIFORD's property and his wife died there of small-pox. (NOTE: About 1649/50.) A Sarah HUNTLEY signed a petition in Boston in 1649.

Marriage to Jane __: (1) About 1650/1. She may be Jane CURTIS, as many descendants in first generations were named Curtis. (1,5) His 2nd wife. (5) Probably about 1650. (7) Perhaps 1651. Her maiden name is unknown, but the name Jane is used in the families of John HANNIFORD, John HUNTLEY's landlord, and Philip CURTIS, with whom he was in partnership. The given name "Curtis" appears in the 4th generation of the HUNTLEY family in Lyme, CT.

Marriage to Mary HAND: (1e) Jun 1669. (5c,7d) Tuesday, 1 Jun 1669, by Thomas MINOR of Stonington, CT. (6) 2 Jun 1669. (6,7e) New London, CT. (7d) During the first day of the Court at New London. (4b) Was dealing in Barbados trade at Boston with Henry PEASE who sold his house there that year to William BRIGGS.

(1,5,7) c.1649/50: (1,5,7) John PEASE (or PRASE) aged 65 years, deposed on 1 Jul 1679 in Boston, MA, that 29 or 30 years ago, Mr. HANNIFORD, mariner, lived in Boston in the house next adjoining the house and grounds of Hope ALLISON, standing on land on which William GRIGGS lately built a house, and this house and land was accounted to be HANNIFORD's own property, and John HUNTLEY lived on and thereof paid the said HANNIFORD rent for the same, and said HUNTLEY's wife died there of small-pox. His removal may have been through his acquaintance with Richard SMITH, who settled in Lyme ca. 1660. The cost of becoming a settler in Lyme apparently was 100 pounds per family, the whole township being an estate of some 3,500 pounds. Perhaps 35 individuals purchased a share of the new plantation but a few sold out to others so that only 30 families can be considered the "first settlers" of Lyme. An agreement between Saybrook and the inhabitants of the new town called "The Loving Parting" was signed 12 Feb 1665. The CT General Court named the new plantation Lyme on 9 May 1667, presumably in honor of Lyme Regis in England, from which place Mathew GRISWOLD, one of the earliest settlers, had come.

Extensive study has been made of the Huntly family of Lyme, Connecticut which originated with the immigration of two brothers from Scotland during the American colonial period.9 The Connecticut Huntlys can trace their ancestry to the Earls of Huntly at Huntly Castle in Aberdeenshire. There was a branch in Wales also. No known studies of the Welsh Huntlys have been done. Descendants of the Connecticut Huntleys seem to be unaware of (and unrelated to) the Pennsylvania Huntleys. The Mormon prophet Joseph Smith has been shown to be a descendant of the Connecticut family. Most, if not all, of the Huntleys with American roots as far back as the mid-eighteenth century seem to be descended from the Connecticut Huntleys, who could only be related to William Huntley in some very ancient way.
