"The name of Kirtland is of Scotch descent; and among the first 36 settlers of Saybrook in 1635, was John Kirtland, who came from Silver-street, London. He had a son John, who was the -father of Daniel, who was the father of the noted missionary, Rev. Samuel Kirkland, who was born in 1701, graduated at Yale in 1720, under the name of Kirtland."
