About Tpr. John Leslie Monk
John Leslie Monk was born at Waipawa in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand on 10 November 1894. He was the son of Alfred George Monk and Alice Elizabeth Monk (nee Galloway) who had married on 1 February 1894. On the night of 12 July 1901 a fire destroyed their family home. The lives of John and his siblings Vera and Alan were saved by their mother Alice. Sadly Alice was severely burned and died from her burns and shock on 3 August 1901. Their father George remarried to Emily Mabel Hyde on 26 November 1902. During World War I John joined the Wellington Mounted Rifles. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 27 August 1915 at the age of 20. John is remembered on the Hill 60 New Zealand Memorial.
