OBITUARY - Democratic Messenger, Seneca Co, Ohio, November 11, 1886:
John Royer, Sr, residing with his son Jerred, about four miles out the Kilburn road, died suddenly Monday afternoon. Mr Royer was an invalid, blind, deaf and afflicted with cancer. His age, being 88 years. Funeral at Zion's Reformed Church, in Thompson twp, Thursday. The same day as John Matz, son-in-law of the deceased, aged 59 years, was on his way home from a visit to the deceased father, he was suddenly taken with a stroke of apoplexy, resulting in his immediate death. Thus the community is startled by the mysterious death of two prominent and esteemed representatives who were ever active in making their days of life, ones of usefulness. Mr Matz leaves a wife and family of grown children.
