GEDCOM Note

According to Francis Scott, his father and mother ran a Hardware store either in Freeport or Whichita that burned in a fire. Jonathan started running around with other women. Jonathan and Emma never divorced, but moved apart. Emma lived with Francis and Imogene in Dearborn, Michigan until her death.

Francis says that Jonathan's brothers were known to be outlaws and horse theives.

FROM NOTE WRITTEN BY ESTRANGED WIFE EMMA TO JONATHAN ON SEPT. 28, 1950:

Obituary of Jonathan Newton Scott was born in White Hall, Illinois on June 12, 1873 and passed away .... When just a boy his parents moved to Winfield, Kansas where he lived and grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Emma Long on Nov 30 1899 - living on a farm near Hackney Kansas until the of of 1903 - when they moved to Harper County for several years where they reared their little family of four children, Marion Leslie, Velma Maye, Clarence Edward and Francis Raymond. They owned a farm south west of Freeport and a general store in Freeport. Newt did custom threshing with his threshing machines and later did custom harvesting with his wheat combines.

In the year of 1929 the family moved to Whichita, Kansas where they bought an apartment house on South Main Street. Jonathan continued to live in Whicita until his death.

FURTHER NOTES FROM EMMA USED FROM OBITUARY FOLLOWING DEATH: Jonathan Scott was a successful farmer, threasherman, and merchant in the Freeport community for many years. As a young man he joined the Methodist Church. In later years he attended the First Baptist Church in Wichita.

Jonathan Newton Scott was born June 12, 1873 in Whitehall, Illinois and his parents, Mahalia Swank Scot and Simon Scott took their family to Kansas when he was four years of age, settling at Winfield, Kansas.

In 1899, Jonathan was united in marriage to Emma Long and in 1904 the moved to Freeport, Kansas.

J.N. Scott Passes Monday, June 12 Around June 12 From unknown newspaper obituary Jonathan Newton Scott, son of Mahalia and Simon Scott, was born June 12, 1873 at Whitehall, Ill. and came to Kansas at the age of four years, with his brothers and sisters and lived at Winfield for a number of years. He was united in marriage to Emma Long on Nov. 30, 1899 and lived at Hackney, Kans., until they moved to Freeport in 1903. Three sons, Marion Leslie, Clarence Edward and Francis Raymond, and one daughter, Velma Maye were born to this union.He is survived by this wife, Emma, two sons, Clarence of Lamesa, Texas, and Francis of Dearborn, Mich.; two grandchildren, Robert Boorn, Sunnydale, Calif. and Mrs. Lawrence Drobnich, Oak Arbor, Wash, and one great grandson, Duane Drobnich.Mr. Scott lived in the Freeport community for many years, where he was engaged in farming and was a merchant in Freeport before moving to Wichita. He passed away on his 88th birthday at Wichita. Funeral services were held at the Downing Mortuary in Wichita Wednesday morning, June 14, and internment was at the Freeport cemetery at 2 p.m. Mrs. Vina Armstrong, Anthony and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Adams attended the funeral services.
