It is generally believed that John Wood Jr and his wife Sarah Clement Wood, with 3 children in tow, left Berkely, MA in 1747 and moved to Morris County, NJ, where they lived until the middle 1750's, then moved to what is now Randolph County, NC.
The NJ sojourn was first recounted by Nora Bethel Wood in "Henry Wood of Middleborough, Massechusetts", written by Judge Elijah Frances Atwood and published in 1945. None who have written about the matter have offered proof for John Wood and his family having lived in New Jersey except for the location there of a Clement Wood, who had a son, Zebedee who was born in 1775. It is possible that Clement, being the eldest son of John and Sarah Clement Wood, may have stayed in New Jersey when the family moved to North Carolina.
There is also a possibility that the Wood family never lived in New Jersey, but came straight to NC from Mass.
There is on file in Hillsborough, NC, an indenture dated 25 Oct 1753, in which Lord Granville made a grant of 640 acres to John Wood (planter) of Granville County in the Province of North Carolina.

Witnesses: R. Wood, John Wood Jr., Zebedee Wood. Witnessed by all of David's older brothers living in NC. The bill of sale was duly proved by Reuben Wood and ordered to be recorded. August Term 1794.
