Jonathan Mowry was baptised April 2, 1637 at Salem in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.[1] He is the son of Roger and Mary Johnson Mowry.[2]
Records of Jonathan at Plymouth consistently spell the name "Morey" or "Mory", and not the "Mowry" spelling used in Rhode Island.[3] The earliest record located of his presence in the Plymouth Colony is a Court order of February 1657-8 warning that he has until June to repay various debts and that he should "not frequent the house of Richard Foster in his absence, which is thought not convenient for him soe to doe..."[4]
Family
Seventeen months after the Court order, Jonathan Morey and Richard Foster's widow Mary signed a pre-nuptial agreement that memorialized conditions for raising her deceased husband's son Benjamin.[5] They were married on July 8, 1659 at Plymouth.[6] Jonathan and Mary had three children who were born at Plymouth:[7]
- Jonathan Morey b ca 1661; m Hannah Bourne
- John Morey b ca 1666;
- Hannah Morey b 1673-5; m John Bumpus
Mary Bartlett (Foster) Morey died at Plymouth on September 26, 1692.[8]
Jonathan married second, widow Hannah Pincen Young Witherell in about 1693-4; they had no children together.[9]
Plymouth
Jonathan Morey's name appears in records of the town of Plymouth over a period of five decades. Early Court notices reveal debt issues, but later records show him to be a frequent jury member, voting on town affairs, and receiving land grants.[10]
For example, in October 1669, Jonathan was a defendant in a case brought by the town of Plymouth for two years non-payment of rent at Agawam. A jury decided on behalf of the Town and Jonathan was ordered to pay the rent, damages, and repay the cost of the suit.[11]
However, by 1701 "Left: Jonathan Morey" was on a committee "to take account of the late...Moneys belonging to the Town."[12]
Death and Estate
Lt. Jonathan Morey died on May 19th, 1708 in his 75th year, in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[13] Jonathan's will, written in February of 1699/1700, mentions his wife Hannah and three children, "my eldest son" [Jonathan Jr.], "John Morey," and "Hannah Bumpas." The will was probated on June 16, 1708.[14] His inventory was taken on 29 May 1708.[15]
Little is known of the generation of Jonathan Morey.
At the time of his parents removal to Rhode Island, Jonathan Morey was about sixteen years old.
He chose to remain at Plymouth, or soon removed from Salem to that town, for it was there he spent his life.
He and his wife appear to have lived quietly in Plymouth, his name appearing only a few times in the records, once with others for non-payment of rent for grazing lands, another as a juryman in 1682, and again when he defended an Indian, William Connett, accused of trespass, resulting in the jury finding the land in question was owned by the Indian.
Will probated 16 Jun 1708 Plymouth.
