JOSEPH HALL, along with his wife MARGARET bought land Sept. 1, 1859 of 50 acres on head waters of west fork of Little Kanawha in Braxton, WV. His son, CURTIS T HALL was born on 19 Nov 1859 on this la nd.
In 1860, JOSEPH HALL is living in Kanawha County.
The Company A of the Virginia State Rangers was known as the Moccasin Rangers. Men, of Arnol dsburg, Calhoun County, W.V, organized the Moccasin Rangers as a home guard unit. When a Capt ain took command of the Calhoun County Home Guards, he began calling them "The Guerrillas". T he men disliked the name, and changed it to "The Moccasin Rangers". The men from Clay Count y with Southern leanings who wanted to enlist with the Confederacy probably first joined th e Moccasin Rangers since Calhoun County is immediately adjacent to Clay County. The United S tates forces considered the Moccasin Rangers outlaws rather than soldiers and gave every indi cation that when captured they would be treated as such. One captured group was charged wit h being bushwhackers, horse thieves, robbing Union men, pressing Union men into the service e tc. One descendant mentions that our JOSEPH HALL knew the danger during the Civil War and sen t his family away prior to being murdered by a group of bushwhackers called "Moccasin Rangers " from Calhoun County, WV. During the Civil War, these bushwhackers sought out and killed Uni on soldiers and sympathizers.
The attack on Joseph occurred on Lower Sleath Creek in Braxton County, WV. Unknown to descend ants where he was buried or the exact year this took place. After his death, wife MARGARE T DRAKE-Hall and their three children moved to lower Roane County, WV. She is listed on thei r children's marriage certificates.
CURTIS HALL was only five years old when his father JOSEPH HALL died about 1862-1864 by Bush whackers. The attack on Joseph Hall occurred on Lower Sleath Creek i n Braxton County, WV. Unknown to descendants where he was buried or the exact year this too k place. After his death, wife MARGARET DRAKE-Hall and their three children moved to lower Roane County, WV. Wv. the "moccasi n Rangers were considered murders and villians by the north and brave fighter by the souther n sympathizers. Family legend says that the the Moccasin Rangers found Joseph Hall out on the hill and asked him to join them. He refused and they shot him, took his hat and with race d on horse back to Joseph's home and threw the hat at high speed onto the front porch for hi s wife to find. ]
