About Joseph Hooper
Joseph Hooper jr was brought up in a committed Christian non-conformist family. He was baptised at the Queen Street Independent Church, in the hamlet of Ratcliff in Stepney, Middlesex, England, by his uncle James Vautin, the minister.
He went to school in Dalston, Hackney, Middlesex, where he became an under-teacher at age 14. Later he spend five years, from age 16, training at Coward College to become a non-conformist Minister (1841-1846). He spent about a year in Tralee, Ireland, working for the Irish Evangelical Society, before returning to England.
In 1848 Joseph married Mary Runtz, They were living in Frome, Dorset. In 1849 Joseph Hooper was ordained as a minister, in Dorset. Their first child, Joseph Runtz Hooper, was born in Dorset. The family was living in the attractive village of Broadway, Worcestershire, by the 1851 census. Joseph was minister here, at a non-conformist church. In 1852 their second son Alfred Southon Hooper was born in Evesham, Worcestershire.
The birth location of the third son Frederic George Hooper was in England, in 1853, not sure where. The next two children were born in Islington, now in London, Ebenezer and Jennie. Arthur's 4 April 1856 birthplace is uncertain.
Joseph's father Joseph died 11 Jan 1856.
EMIGRATION to Canada
1858 - the family moved to Canada, where Joseph jr was a Congregationalist minister at Grey Sound, Ontario, Canada.Daughter Mary (1860?) and sons John and James were born in Canada. Son William H Hooper was born 1861 in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada.
2nd EMIGRATION about 1865, across the water to Michigan. Joseph jr trained as a homeopathic doctor in the US (in Ohio?), and worked as such in Bay City, Michigan. Daughter Clara was born 1866 in Ohio. Daughter Louise 1868 Corunna, Michigan.
