--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kathryn McCurry Albertson, (1908-2002) was a Boise native. She attended local schools and enrolled at the College of Idaho in Caldwell. It was during a chemistry class that she spilled an acid solution on her leg, and Joe Albertson came to her rescue. They were married on New Year's Day in 1930.
The couple started a local grocery store. That business grew into one of the largest supermarket chains in America (Albertsons). Joe passed away in 1993. Kathryn remained on the Corporate Board of Directors for several more years. In 1998 the company honored her with the title Director Emeritus.
Kathryn's unassuming attitude has kept her out of the spotlight, but not from being the light in many lives. Her inner strength and caring garners repeated praise, as have the Albertsons' generous donations to Albertson College of Idaho, Boise State University, and many other institutions through their foundation. The couple strongly believed that “once you make it, you need to give back”.
Kathryn Albertson Park, consisting of 43 acres was donated to the City of Boise and the people of Idaho, by the Joe and Kathryn Albertson Foundation. It is a unique and precious treasure designed to be an attractive home for resident and migratory wildlife in downtown Boise.
She and Joe Albertson are interred at the Morris Hill Cemetery in Boise.
Note: Wife of Joseph Albertson, founder of the Albertson's grocery store chain.
