William G. S. Powell and his wife, Leah Rogers Powell, brought their four small children to Kansas after the Civil War by oxen driven wagon in 1872. Apparently, Tom Batson (his brother-in-law) and W.G.S.Powell had a little legal battle over some property and he didn't see a need to stay in WV. Besides, the government was offering incentives to settlers who were willing to come a little west and farm stead and make improvements for at least five years. They lived in Chautauqua Co. Ks.
Leah Rogers Powell died after only four years in Kansas at age 40. After W.G.S. Powell died in 1900, his son Charlie and his wife, Rosa Mae, moved to Havana, Kansas (Montgomery Co. KS) to run the Powell Telephone Company, hotel, café and garage. (Kept all nine kids pretty busy)
