About Lewis Mendelssohn
Lewis, in the British Jewish chronical wedding notice of February 1904, is described as "Rev. Lewis Mendelssohn, the well-known Rabbinical scholar of Leeds".
On 4th October 1911, a "Chalcovitz, Lewis (known as Lewis Mendelssohn)" of "Carnarvon, 26, Sackville Road, Bangor" took the Oath of Allegiance (Reported in the London Gazette, 3 November 1911.)
Within the family history, he is stated to have, for a short time, been the Rabbi in Barnoldswick - a small Yorkshire town later to become better known by the family when Abraham Blumfield (Nephew of Lewis) became a doctor in the town before WWII - and to have become a Rabbi of a congregation somewhere in the USA, after his emigration.
After 11 years of marriage, and the death of his wife Beatrice in 1915, he left Bangor, Wales for America on the "Philadelphia", on 18 November 1916. (On the ship's manifest, it is stated that Lewis had a Mendelsohn brother, living in 9 Rugby Street, Leeds at the time. His - Lewis's - occupation is listed as "dealer in Jewellery", and his age as 42. His contact in the USA was "Friend. Mrs Louis Officer" in New York. His place of birth is given as "Russia, Novogrodurk").
After the death of his wife Basia, he left Bangor and moved to be with a brother in Leeds for a while, and after immigrating to America, became a Hebrew Teacher in Concord, New Hampshire. On his WWI draft registration card, he listed his closest relative as a sister - Shaindel Israel - as his closest relative.
