  • Lewis ab Owen (by 1522-55), of Plas-yn-dre, Dolgellau, Merioneth, was a Welsh politician.
  • He was born the eldest son of Owen ap Hywel ap Llywelyn.
  • He is presumed to have had some legal education as he was appointed Chamberlain and 1st Baron of the Exchequer for North Wales.
  • He served as a J.P. for Merioneth from 1543 until his death and was appointed Sheriff of Merioneth for 1545 and 1554. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Merioneth 1547, March 1553, April 1554, and November 1554. He was custos rotulorum for Merioneth from 1553 to his death.[1]
  • After carrying out a vicious campaign to put down the Red Bandits of Mawddwy (some 80 were executed) during his shrievalty in 1555 he was ambushed and killed on a return journey from Montgomeryshire. He had married Margaret, the daughter of Robert Puleston; they had eight sons and four daughters.

  • AB OWEN, Lewis (by 1522-55), of Plas-yn-dre, Dolgellau, Merion.
  • b. by 1522, 1st s. of Owen ap Hywel ap Llywelyn by Gwenhwyfar, da. of Meurig ab Ieuan. m. Margaret, da. of Robert Puleston of Hafod Y Wern, nr. Wrexham, Denb., 8s. inc. Hugh† and John Lewis†, 4da.2
  • Lewis ab Owen came of an old Welsh family boasting a pedigree back to Gwrgan ab Ithel, prince of Powis. Nothing has been discovered about his early life but he was presumably equipped by some legal training for his appointment before the death of Henry VIII as vice-chamberlain of North Wales and a baron of the exchequer at Caernarvon, after which he was known as Baron Owen. With the Union he emerged as one of the leaders of Merionethshire society and this ascendancy was reflected in his return as knight of the shire to four out of the five Parliaments summoned between 1547 and 1554, although at three of the elections concerned the sheriff was his ally Richard Mytton. His own shrievalty prevented him from sitting in the Parliament of 1555: if he had done so his life might have been prolonged.4
  • Owen made some acquisitions of land in the reign of Edward VI, in 1550 securing a 21-year lease of tenements at Nannau, Wenarth, the fishing rights at Barmouth, and other lands in the commote of Talybont at a yearly rent of £2 8s.5d.; he also leased some of the demesne lands of Llanegryn, also in Talybont commote, including the grist mill, which was in ruin and which he promised to rebuild. In 1552 he took a 21-year lease of the township of Dolgellau and in the following year obtained some former monastic property at Talyllyn: it was with Richard Nannau of Nannau that he joint-leased three tenements at Dolgellau, three at Nannau and some mountain land at Trawsfynydd, whereas his own and the Nannau family were later to be at odds there.5
  • It was during his shrievalty in 1554-5 that Owen and John Wynn ap Meredydd set themselves to put down the red-haired brigands of Mawddwy and succeeded in executing about 80 of them. The survivors vowed revenge on Owen, and their chance came when he had to go into Montgomeryshire for the assizes and to discuss with Richard Mytton a marriage between his heir John and Mytton’s daughter. It was on the return journey ‘about All Hallowtide’ 1555 that he was ambushed and murdered.6

**'''Owen, Lewis (d.1555)
  • * by John Edward Lloyd
  • OWEN, LEWIS (d. 1555), Welsh administrator, was the son of Owen ap Hywel ap Llywelyn of Llwyn, Dolgellau. Under Henry VIII he became vice-chamberlain of North Wales and baron of the exchequer of Carnarvon, taking from the latter office his familiar title of ‘y Barwn Owen.’ He was sheriff of Merioneth for 1545–6 and 1554–5, and he represented the county in the parliaments of 1547, of the spring of 1553, and of 1554. He lived at Cwrt Plas yn dre, Dolgellau, which, until its recent removal to Newtown, was pointed out to tourists as ‘Owen Glyndwr's parliament-house.’ Owen met his death at the hands of ‘Gwylliaid Cochion Mawddwy,’ the red-haired brigands of the Mawddwy district. Empowered by a commission to extirpate the band, he and John Wynn ap Maredudd of Gwydir one Christmas-eve seized over eighty of them, and in due time had them executed. The rest swore revenge, and on 11 Oct. 1555 waylaid him near Mallwyd as he was returning from the Montgomeryshire assizes. His retinue fled, leaving only his son-in-law, John Lloyd of Ceiswyn, to defend him, and he fell pierced with more than thirty wounds. The spot is still known as ‘Llidiart y Barwn,’ the Baron's Gate.
  • Owen married Margaret, daughter of Robert Puleston, rector of Gresford, and had seven sons—John Lewis of Cwrt Plas yn dre, Hugh of Cae'rberllan, Edward of Hengwrt, Gruffydd of Peniarth, Robert of Bron- clydwr, Simon and Ellis—and four daughters: Elin, Elizabeth, Catrin, and Mary. His descendant, Hugh Owen (1639–1700) [q. v.], is separately noticed. Many important Merionethshire families, such as the Wynnes of Peniarth and the Vaughans of Nannau, trace their descent from him.

  • OWEN , LEWIS (‘ Baron Owen’; d. 1555 ), judge ; son of Owen ap Hywel ap Llywelyn , of Llwyn , Dolgelley . Under Henry VIII he was appointed deputy-chamberlain of North Wales and baron (i.e. judge) of the exchequer at Caernarvon ; he was sheriff of Merioneth in 1545-6 and 1554-5 , and Member of Parliament for the shire in 1547 , 1553 , and 1554 ; he lived at Cwrt Plas-yn-dre , Dolgelley . As sheriff , he undertook to extirpate the ‘ Red Bandits of Mawddwy ,’ and in revenge was killed , 11 Oct. 1555 , on the spot still known as ‘ Llidiart-y-barwn ,’ near Mallwyd, Mer.
  • Owen was twice m., and from his first marriage issued an unusually large number of the later gentle families of Merionethshire who appear in the present work; see J. E. Griffith , Pedigrees , 363. From the eldest son, JOHN OWEN of Llwyn , came the Bronclydwr family (see Hugh Owen , 1639- 1700 ). The second son, HUGH OWEN of Cae'rberllan , Dolgelley , a lawyer , would appear to have been the ancestor of the Tan-y-gadair family (see Henry Owen , 1716- 1795 ), but the pedigrees are inconclusive on this point. The third son, EDWARD OWEN of Hengwrt ( Griffith , op. cit. 201), was the grandfather of the antiquary Robert Vaughan (q.v.) and the ancestor of the later Hengwrt and Nannau families . The fourth son, GRIFFITH OWEN , of Tal-y-bont , Llanegryn , married the heiress of Peniarth ( Griffith , op. cit., 323); some hold that his eldest son, Lewis , was identical with the Lewis Owen who is the subject of the next article — if so (but the evidence is shaky), the ‘spy’ would be the grand-father of the famous Dissenter Hugh Owen of Bronclydwr , for Susan , daughter of Lewis Owen of Tal-y-bont , was Hugh Owen 's mother; it will be noticed that the Bronclydwr and Tal-y-bont families, each descended from ‘ baron’ Owen , had intermarried. Another of Griffith Owen 's sons was Henry , father of the Independent divine John Owen ( 1616- 1683 ) (q.v.) . The fifth of ‘ baron’ Owen 's sons was ROBERT OWEN of Dolserau ( Dolgelley ) — see Griffith , op. cit., 363 — grandfather of the Quaker Robert Owen (d. 1685 , q.v.) , and great-grandfather of the Quaker Griffith Owen (q.v.) .
