Included in (slightly corrected) extracts of letters written by Dr. Ing. Ernest Arthur BOAS, nephew of Ismar BOAS, to L.J.HOENIG & J.D. BOYLE, authors of a piece on the eminent gastroenterologist.

The Big Boas Family:

"In Exin, Hermann Boas and his wife raised a family of 12 children: 11 sons and 1 daughter. My father Max Boas was the youngest member of the family. Thus I had 10 uncles and 1 aunt. I got to know only my aunt and the last 5 uncles, the eldest of whom was Professor Dr. Ismar Boas. They were called: Ismar, Sigmund, Alex, Leon and David.

All were hard and efficient workers, starting from scratch, but obtaining positions well above the average. They asked much from themselves and therefore from their families as well, which resulted in an autocratic family life. They were well-educated, loving music and literature. They remained modest, rarely showing their wealth, being good and patriotic citizens, admiring the German culture. They were enlightened, modern Jews, having abandoned the orthodox life, which their parents had still practiced. Their life is the mirror of the tragedy of German Jewry."

The remainder of his family:

"Max Boas, an honorary-consul of an overseas country, went with his wife to South America, where they died peacefully in the years 1946 and 1954. They had 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters. The elder son was killed by the nazis, the two daughters died in 1969 and 1978. The writer, born in 1900, is now the only living one."

(signed Ernest A. Boas, Pully, Switzerland, July 28th. 1896)

And cf. 1946 death notice posted for mother-in-law Gertrud BOAS, née JOSEPH in Aufbau newspaper, New York
