About Lt. / Rev. Samuel Houston
Samuel Houston, fifth child of John Houston the emigrant and his wife Margaret Cunningham Houston, was born in Ireland about 1728 and came to America with his parents in 1735. He died 1797 at the age of sixty-nine years in Blount or Knox County, Tennessee. He married Elizabeth McCrosky, daughter of John McCrosky and his wife Elizabeth of Augusta County, Virginia. Their children were: John Houston, James Houston; Robert Houston; Margaret Houston; William Houston: Matthew Houston: Elizabeth Houston by second wife?). Robert Houston third son of Samuel Houston and his wife Elizabeth McCrosky Houston, was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, 1760. About the year 1792 Robert Houston removed from Washington County, Virginia to Tennessee where he lived till his death in 1835. His farm was about eight miles southeast of Knoxville on the south side of the French Broad River. At about the same time another Robert Houston came to Knox County from Abbeville District, South Carolina and the death of Robert Houston occurred April 2, 1834 -- thus but a few months difference in the decease of the two. The above facts have led to a considerable confusion by historians as to the separate identities.
