Sir John 7th Lord of Kimmerghame served with the military in Germany immediately after WW2 and, during the Fifties, had worked as aide-de-camp to Sir William Slim, Governor General of Australia. After returning to Germany he took command of the Queen's Household Division between 1976 and 1979 and, for eleven years from 1989, was Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire.
