Married his sister Rebecca's stepdaughter Janet Agnew.

Hugh was a left-handed Blacksmith and a Judge of the Common Pleas. He was ordained Nov. 1776 as Elder of the Presbyterian Church, Pigeon Creek. He was one of the signers of the "Religious Agreement" written by James Edger.

Hugh served as a Major in the 2nd Battalion of the Pennsylvania Militia.
