  • NOTE: The Province of Schleswig-Holstein did not exist until 1868. It was created from the Duchy of Schleswig (a fief of the King of Denmark) and from the Duchy of Holstein (an associated state of the German Confederation from 1815 to 1864). From 1864-1866 the Duchy of Holstein was controlled by the Austrian Empire, following the Second Schleswig War of 1864. In 1866 Holstein came under the control of the Kingdom of Prussia, after the Prussians defeated the Austrians in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. As of 1867 both duchies were annexed by Prussia. After the creation of the German Empire in 1871, the Province of Schleswig-Holstein became one of its constituent states.
