About Mary Spence of Ingsay

MARY SPENCE OF INGSAY (1732-1800)

is the daughter and eventual heiress of Robert Spence of Ingsay. Following her father's death she became the udal proprietrix of the four penny land of Ingsay and other lands [Reports of Cases Decided in the Supreme Courts of Scotland, and in the House of Lords on Appeal from Scotland: Being a Continuation of the Scottish Jurist, Volume IX (Edinburgh, 1837), pp. 150-53].

Mary Spence was probably born in 1732 for her baptism was registered at Birsay in Orkney, Scotland, on 15 September 1732 [Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, index, FamilySearch] https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X18Q-6B6

Trust Disposition and Settlement

In 1774 Mary Spence executed a settlement in favour of herself and her husband, John Rendall, Wright in Stromness, in liferent, and their children in fee [Reports of Cases Decided in the Supreme Courts of Scotland, and in the House of Lords on Appeal from Scotland: Being a Continuation of the Scottish Jurist, Volume IX (Edinburgh, 1837), pp. 150-53].

1828 George Rendall and others v Rendall and Robertson: Reduction. Production in process: 1. Charter of feu ferme by Alexander Douglas of Spyne, factor and commissioner and principal chamberlain of the Earldom of Orkney and Lordship of Zetland in favour of Robert Spence alias Ingsay in Suannay and Margaret Seatter, his spouse of the fourpenny kingsland under the house of Ingsay above the hill in Birsay, with houses and others lying in the parish of Birsay, Earldom and sheriffdom of Orkney, dated 22 May 1665. 2. Instrument of Sasine thereon in favour of Robert Spence and Margaret Seatter, dated the 5 and recorded in the Particular Register of Sasines at Kirkwall, the 20 Oct 1665. 3. Extract instrument of Sasine in favour of John Spence, son of Robert Spence of Ingsay, in the said lands and other lands therein described, dated 16 and 18 May 1677, and recorded in the Particular Register of Sasines at Kirkwall the 8 Jun 1677. 4. Disposition by Mary Spence spouse to John Rendal, wright in Stromness, only lawful daughter and heir in life of the deceased Robert Spence of Ingsay who was son and heir of the also deceased John Spence of Ingsay in favour of the said John Rendal in liferent, during all the days of his life, and thereafter to the children procreate on to be procreate betwixt them in fee of the lands of Ingsay and other lands therein described lying in the parish of Birsay and Harray and Sheriffdom of Orkney dated 23 Feb 1774. 5. Extract retour of the Special Service of John Rendal, tailor in Stromness as heir to Robert Spence, of Ingsay, his great great grandfather, in the said lands of Ingsay and others, dated 14 Jan 1813. 6. Extract retour of the Special Service of John Rendal residing in Stromness as heir to John Spence sometime in Ingsay, his great grandfather, in said lands of Ingsay and other lands therein described, dated 18 Sep 1813. 7. Instrument of sasine in favour of John Rendal, residing in Stromness, in said lands of Ingsay and Brattavel in the parish of Harray, on Crown Precept, dated said sasine 20 Dec 1813, and recorded in the Particular Register of Sasines at Kirkwall, 21 Dec 1813. 8. Disposition by John Rendall of Insay in favour of Mrs Christain Johnston, alias Robertson, relict of the deceased John Robertson, merchant in Stromness, of the said lands of Ingsay in the parish of Birsay, and the room and lands of Vestaben in the parish of Harray in the Sheriffdom of Orkney, under burden of the annuity therein mentioned, dated 23 Jan 1819. 9. Instrument of Sasine thereon in favour of the said Mrs Christian Johnston alias Robertson, dated 25 Nov 1820, and recorded in the Particular Register of Sasine at Kirkwall, 9 Jan 1820.
