Mary Jane grew up in Rushen on the Isle of Man. When she was just a baby, her father emigrated to Australia. Mary, her mum and 2 brothers stayed on the Isle of Man for another 6 years. In 1862 they boarded the Marco Polo bound for Melbourne. They arrived in Melbourne in January, 1863 and reunited with Edward (dad) who had established himself as a blacksmith in Bendigo. Mary Jane and John had 10 kids-John Edward (1873-1951) (my great grandfather), Elizabeth Gertrude (Gertie) (later Mrs. Murdock) (1875-1943), Ethel Margaret (1878-1881), Ellen Jane (later Mrs. Bowden), Amelia Grace (later Mrs. Jealous) (1882-1928), Thomas Christian (1884-1935) (Thomas married Ethel May Mahoney (1886-1912) and later Elsie May Baldock), Percival James (1887-1951) (he married Dorothy L. M. Holmes in England in 1919; he married Hazel Hyde Hampson in 1938), Hilda Lavinia (1890-1952), Gladys Irene (1892-1894) and William Charles Douglas (1895-1971) (married Eileen Guest).
