About Matthew Thompson
Matthew Thompson
- Birth: 1720 in County Donegal, Ireland
- Death: 1786 in Abbeyville County, South Carolina
Biography
Matthew Thompson was one of many Scots-Irish who emigrated to America and settled in the Valley of Virginia, Matthew emigrated with his father, another Matthew Thompson, and his brother William. His birth is estimated at 1720. Chalkley lists a land patent in Augusta County to "Matthew Thompson and Matthew Thompson, Jr. " in 1742. [1] Many accounts state that Matthew was married to a woman named Mary Frazier about 1740 but there are no records of that marriage. Mary Thompson is listed as a testator on the will of Matthew Thompson (Sr). Patrick Frazier appears on many legal records with the Thompsons so it appears that there were Frazier neighbors. [2] Mary died and Matthew married Rachel Allen in 1762. Matthew and Rachel sold their land in Virginia and moved their family to South Carolina about 1774. [3] They were the parents of at least 10 children (named in Matthew's will, see below). Matthew was a member of the South Carolina militia in the Revolutionary War. [4] Matthew Thompson wrote his will in anticipation of his death during the war, saying: "executors are in Maj. Williamson's army and may not return; wife to "council with the wisest that she & her children can procure." Fortunately for all, Matthew survived the war and returned home to his family. He died August 14, 1786. His will lists the following children: Matthew, William, James, Ann, Mary, Margaret, Marjory, Rachel, Agnes, Elizabeth, and one unborn. [5]
Burial: Bull Town, near what is now known as Pennial Church, about 1 1/2 mi. SE of Rocky River Presbyterian Church
