Matthew Trewhella

!NOTE: Matthew only appears on the Protestation Returns of 1641 for Towednack,

with his father and brother James. As he would have to be 18, he was born

prior to 1623. As no Matthew was found in St. Erth prior to the birth of

Matthew to Thomas Trewhella in 1652, it is unlikely that this Matthew was

a brother of James Sr., but probably a son. Matthew, son of Thomas,

would then be named for him. This Matthew disappears from the records,

and cannot be found elsewhere in Cornwall, and probably died unmarried

and still fairly young. He could possibly be the famous "Mathy

Trewhella" of the Zennor mermaid tale.
