The son of Margaret Beck, he married Martha unk. and fathered George (b. @1844), Joseph (b. @1846), Elizabeth (b. @1849), John William (b. @1850), Franklin (b. @1857), and James (b. 1860). In 1850, he lived in Franklin Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, in 1860 was a shoemaker living in Butler Township, Adams County, and in 1870, resided in Tyrone Township, Adams County. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes. The 1870 census claims an 1813 year of birth.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Adams County October 16, 1862, as a substitute for Daniel Boblitz, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 7, 1862, as a private with Co. I, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.
