Mons Torkelson was born on the farm Sioe (today Sjo), in Fjelberg, Hordaland County, Norway on November 7, 1820. Parents: Torckel Monsson and Mari Johanesdtr Sioe. He came to America from Bergen, Norway. In USA he used the name Torkelson and not Sioe or today Sjo.
He married Anna (Helgesdtr Eidi) Helgerson 1853. To this union 10 children were born: Maria(Mary), Hilge(Helge), Birtha(Bertha), Torkel, John, Lisabeth(Elizabeth), Helena, Mikel(Michael), Anna and Johanna. They farmed near Ossian, Iowa til his death on August 1, 1895. They are both buried at the Stavanger Church Cemetery, Rural Ossian, Iowa
Church records state he died Aug 1 with burial on Aug 3 but the notice of death in the newspaper states it to be Aug 2
