About Neil MacKinnon
From "All Call Iona Home" Donald "Ban" is the progenitor of the MacKinnons in Mackinnon's Harbour.
Donald "Ban" (Malcolm) MacKinnon came to Pictou in 1802 with his family. He had already married Ann MacInnis and their family: Neil, Flora, Ann, Mary, Allan, Rory, and Charles. Land was scarce in the area, so Allan, Rory, and Charles left to settle in mackInnon's Harbour. Their sister Mary had married John (Rory "Red") MacNeil, Iona Rear and had a family (see #199).
It goes on to detail Allan (#465), Rory (#471), and Charles (#474) in subsequent paragraphs. The others are covered in "History of Christmas Island Parish"
"History of Christmas Island Parish: page #79-80:
Donald McKinnon. “Domhnall Ban MacChaluim” and his descendants at Cooper Pond.
This man came to Pictou in 1802 but did not remain there more than two or three years. When his friends, John McNeil (Rory) and Neil McNeil (Ban), were coming to Grand Narrows, he came with them and staked out lands at Cooper Pond. He was married to Ann McInnis. Issue: — Neil, Flora, Ann, Allan, Rory, and Charles.
Neil settled at Cooper Pond, and married Margaret, daughter of Neil McNeil (Ban). Issue: — Angus, Rory, Flora, Malcolm, Catherine, Ann, Donald, and Mary.
Neil McKinnon (Donald Ban) was killed by a tree he was cutting in the woods. It appeared that the tree got entangled in other trees; that he put his shoulder under it to dislodge it; that the tree slipped sideways jamming him by the neck against another tree and thus he was strangled to death.
From page #114 in "History of Christmas Island Parish":
Neil Ban McNeil came to Pictou in 1802 and from there he came to Cooper’s Pond with the first settlers. He took up six hundred acres of land. He was married to Ann, daughter of Rory McNeil.
Issue: — Margaret, Malcolm, Rory, John.
Margaret married Neil McKinnon (Donald Ban).
