Nikolaus Glass was born in Strasburg, Russia, to parents Michael Glass and Franciska (Hager) Glass in 1868.

His family had a rough life over in Russia, because at that time, Russians were communist and were kidnapping Germans and loading them on to carts. The Germans that ended up on these carts were brought somewhere to be executed, just like the infamous Holocaust that would happen nearly half a century in the future. Nikolaus and his family had to have there church meetings underground because their religion (Christianity) was illegal back then and if they were caught by the Russians, they would be killed.

They took a boat from Bremen, Germany and arrived 2 weeks later in America (I think in New York). From there they took a train to South Dakota and then Strasburg, North Dakota, where they built a farm.

He was married to Gertrud "Gerdie" Jung
