About Nora J. Sungy

Nora J. Cooper (also lovingly called “Maman” or “Mop”), 86, of Ashland passed away at Brethren Care Village on Saturday, September 2, 2017. She was born June 12, 1931 in Barberton, Ohio. She was the beloved daughter of the late Charles and Helen (Locas) Sungy.

Nora was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church where she was an active leader. She was a member of the Ashland City Teachers Association, Ohio Education Association, National Education Association, Past President of Ashland City Retired Teachers Association, and Delta Alpha Gamma. She was a 1953 graduate of Ashland College where she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen. Nora met the love of her life who became her husband at Ashland College. She taught French at Hillsdale and Ashland High Schools.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Richard Cooper; four children, Bret (Jeannie Prest) Cooper of Worthington, Amie (Bob) Reynolds of St. Louis, Curt (Cheryl Newton) Cooper of Powell, and Douglas (Deb) Cooper of Ashland; eleven grandchildren, Aubrey, Emily, Pete, Nate, Tessa, Erica, Drew, Amanda, Christopher, Michael, and Alyssa; eight great-grandchildren, Keslar, Ty, Annie, Kelynn, Allie, Leeland, Eden, Vienna, and 2 on the way; three brothers, Charles (Barb) Sungy, Anthony Sungy and John Sungy; three sisters, Betty Long, Helen (Bruce) Steiner, and Kathy Hammons; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Goehler and Penny Villers.

Friends may call from 5-7pm on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 308 Claremont Avenue Ashland, OH 44805. A funeral service officiated by Pastor Ignatius David and Rev. Jeffrey Coggins will be held at 11am on Friday, September 8, 2017 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 322 Cleveland Ave. Ashland, OH 44805 with an additional hour of calling from 10-11am. Burial will follow immediately in Ashland Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made in Nora’s honor to Coffee Growing Community, 859 Country Club Lane Ashland, OH 44805 (Doug Cooper’s non-profit charitable organization) or Brethren Care Village, 2000 Center Street Ashland, OH 44805.
