About Paolina Lillo
Based on ship manifests, Paolina returned to Italy several times to visit family. She never naturalized, but because she married Donato before the Cable Act was enacted, she obtained US citizenship through his naturalization. She was Donato’s second wife, and married him at the age of 28. (He naturalized in 1892; they married in 1898.)
The marriage record lists her name as “Leillo.” Considering the number of clerical errors on US documents, it is more likely that the name was “Lillo,” a fairly common name in the region in which she was born, and it appears as Lillo i other documents.
