About Parthenia Pendarvis
Joseph Pendarvis (c.1699-1736) of St Philip's Pr, Berkeley County, SC; owned 1009 acres in Colleton County near Green's Savannah and a plantation on Charlestown Neck. Joseph never married, but his will, dated 11 Feb 1735/6, proved 17 Mar 1735/6, named his seven "children of a Negro woman named Parthena, deceased, that lived with me." The inventory of his father's estate, 1724, lists "Negro woman Pothenia and child." Joseph manumitted her and her children 8 Mar 1734/5, less than a year before her death. An old family story speaks of an unspecified seafaring father taking his son to the Caribbean to teach him how to be a man. The son found the women of the islands very beautiful, had his father buy one for him, and brought her home. . 1.
