Paul Highum, 74, Minot, ND, died January 3, 2006 in a Bismarck hospital.
He was born on October 14, 1931, in Lanesboro, MN, the son on Dr. Alvin "Bill" W. and Stella (Hefte) Highum. He was reared and educated in Lanesboro and graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1949. After graduation he attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN for 2 years and continued his education at the University of Minnesota where in 1954, he earned his Bachelors Degree in Sociology. Paul entered the United States Army in 1958, serving during peace time at Fort Hood, TX and was honorably discharged in 1962.
Paul married Mary Ann Hoernemann on September 16, 1961, in Minneapolis, MN. While living in Minnesota Paul worked for the Big Brother Program and the couple had one son, Alan. The family moved to Lincoln, NE, where Paul continued his education and earned his Master Degree is Social Work from the University of North Lincoln Nebraska. They later moved to Iowa City, IA, where Paul worked for Lutheran Social Services with Adoption in Foster Care Children. It was here that Paul and Mary celebrated the birth of their second child, Sara. Later the family moved to Mankato, MN, where Paul worked for the Minnesota Valley Mental Health Center.
In 1974, the family moved to Minot where Paul went to work at St. Joseph Hospital in the Psychiatric Ward for over 25 years, until retiring to care for his wife Mary. Mary died on August 7, 1994. Paul continued to live in Minot and was most recently busy assisting his daughter, Sara in Tappen, ND.
Paul was a member of First Lutheran Church, Minot, where he was active on the church council, the gifts program, caregivers program, cathedral choir, taught bible study and Sunday school. Paul also enjoyed singing with the Nodakords and Square Dancing. He was an avid bird watcher, and sports fan especially the Cubs, Packers and Vikings.
Survivors: son, Alan Highum, Minot; daughter, Sara Highum, Tappen, ND; brother, William H. Highum, Atlanta, GA; brother-in-law, William (Karen) Hoernemann; nieces, Jean French and Judy Morgan; nephews, Paul and Mark Hoernemann and Tom, Eric, Jim and Matt Highum. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary his parents and sister-in-law, Joanne Highum.
