Pauline Whitebread, 86, Topeka, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 1996, at a Topeka nursing home.
She and her first husband, Kenneth C. Smith, owned a dress shop and a cleaning shop in Cherryvale. She also served as a receptionist for her brother, Dr. Joseph Waxse, until 1971. He later worked as a receptionist for Drs. Hulman and Farly from 1971 until her retirement in 1981.

She was born July 4, 1910, at Sapulpa, Okla., the daughter of Paul and Ida Fox Waxse. She grew up in Independence and attended schools there.

Mrs. Whitbread was president of the Labette County Medical Assistants and the Business and Professional Women's Club at Chetopa and Oswego. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She married Kenneth C. Smith. He preceded her in death. She married Raymond Whitbread in 1958. He died in 1964.
Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Lou Smith Clementz, Harrisburg, Pa.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Luther Place II or the Marion Clinic and sent in care of the funeral home.
