About Per "Dead" Ohlin
[Per Yngve Ohlin], more commonly known by his stage name "Dead" and nickname "Pelle" was a Swedish metal musician, best known as the lead vocalist & lyricist of the Norwegian black metal band [Mayhem] from 1988 until his death in 1991. Before joining Mayhem, he also performed as singer-lyricist in the Swedish death metal band [Morbid]. Later leaving the group due to artistic differences, feeling that the band wasn't going anywhere. Dead left behind him an everlasting legacy, mostly in the Norwegian black metal scene due to his unparalleled dedication to performing and prominent stage persona.
Dead has often times been attributed as the first ever musician to use corpse paint to specifically look "dead", Starting to wear it in the late 1980s. According to his fellow bandmate Necrobutcher, Dead did not use face paint as an aesthetic or to look cool but rather as a form of expression of how he felt about himself. The actual origin of similar face paint in popular music goes back a few decades to the 1960s and historically several centuries earlier. It is however unknown if the earliest adaptations of "corpse paint" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Arthur Brown were inspiration for Dead.
(Do not make this profile a glorification of suicide and mental illness. I do not support nor do i endorse the people who honor or see his suicide as a good thing. I only see him as great artist who lost a battle similar to others so many of us face)
