About Peter Shown, II

Peter is buried in the Shown Cemetery in Ohio Co. Ky.

The Shown Cemetery is just over the summit of Hoover Hill to the South and immediately along side of Highway 231 and 6 miles north of Hartford, Ky. It is fenced on three sides with a heavy cyclone fence, which was donated by Edward Hoover, a great grandson of Peter who founded the farm on which the cemetery is located. The fence is anchored in concrete and a fourteen inch trench of crtushed rock lises under the fence to prevent the growth of vegetation. The front facing the highway was left open except for a row of short cedar posts painted white. Edward Hoover also donated a bronze plaque and it is placed in the foreground of the cemetery with the inscription "The Shown Cemetery".

Peter came into the community of Buckhorn, now Beda, Ky. in the early part of the 1820's. He felled trees in a virgin forest and build his home and barns and here he raised a large family. There has been some changes in tghe old home, but the original home still stands. The name "Tanglewood" has been given to the frarm since he has owned it. The old barn still stands in remarkable condition despite its age. It is so perfectly constructged that it has defied the storms that have swept through that part of Ohio Co. Very few barns of its architecture are left. The barn is a spacious one, in the center is a large space about 24 ft square. It was at one time floored and used as a tramping floor for threshing grain. There is an old spring down in the corner of the barn lot that has been a source of fresh water for many decades. Peter was known as an expert carpenter and cabinet maker.
