Rabbi Dov Berish Weidenfeld (1881-1965) was the Chief Rabbi of Tshebin (Trzebinia), Poland, and after World War II spent his final years in Jerusalem. His principal work of Jewish law is titled "Dovev Meisharim".

Dov Berish was born in Hrimlov, Galicia (now Ukraine) on 5 January 1881 (5 Shvat 5641 in the Jewish calendar) to his father Jacob 'Yekele' Weidenfeld, rabbi of the town and author of the responsa Kochav miYaakov.[1]

With Reb Yekele's passing shortly before Beirish's Bar Mitzvah, the delicate task of raising a new prodigy fell to his widow - herself renowned for her genius and wit (she wrote a great number of her husband's responsa on dictation) and to her two older sons: Reb Yitzchak, who replaced his late father as Rav of Rimlov, and Reb Nachum, Rav of Dombrovo and author of the Chazon Nachum, and later celebrated as a great posek in his own right.

By age 19 Reb Beirish entered by marriage into the illustrious family of Rav Yisroel Yoseif HaCharif of Tshebin. Since he did not want any rabbinic post, his wife administered a modest coal business, while he continued his single-minded pursuit of Torah study, amassing knowledge of phenomenal breadth and scope. Nonetheless, the avalanche of requests from varied kehillos that he lead them as their Rav continued, and his friend, Reb Meir Arik, prayed that his business fail so that Klal Yisrael not be deprived of his leadership. For twenty years, this Tshebiner ba'al habayis (layman) - already renowned as the "Gaon of Tshebin" - was consulted by leading rabbanim with whom he maintained a vigorous correspondence; still he remained deaf to all rabbinical offers. However, due to his love of learning and teaching, he would commute daily to and from [Cracow] to say shiurim to the local bachurim after business hours.

He carefully collected copies of these responsa, amassing enough material to publish ten volumes. In 1937 he succeeded in producing the first and only sefer every printed in Tshebin, entitled Doveiv Meishorim - the other nine volumes were never published.

His noted son-in-law, his successor as rosh yeshiva of Kochav MiYaakov, and a noted gaon and author in his own right, Rabbi Baruch Shimon Schneersohn relates: Upon republishing these responsa some 26 years after they were written, he included the Rav's subsequent handwritten glosses to the first edition. He found not one correction, only additional proofs to those very answers originally written without as much as a Gemara.

The Tshebiner Rav's picture, along with those of the Rebbeim of Ger and Belz, had appeared in the venomous tabloid Die Sturmer, his caption reading: "The world's greatest Talmudist." Realizing that he was a target for elimination, he fled, crossing the Communist border and entering Lvov (Lemberg). Communist authorities were carrying out their systematic erasure of religious life, and the gaon of Tshebin, along with his wife, youngest daughter and thousands of other Jews, were deported to Siberia, arriving in Sverdelovsk, Siberia, in late 1940.

The Tshebiner Rav arrived on Erev Pesach, 1946, in Jerusalem, which he was to call home for the rest of his life. He was soon recognized as one of the leaders of Chareidi Jewry in the Land of Israel and served as a leading member of the Council of Sages of Agudas Yisroel.

He established the Kochav miYaakov Yeshiva in Jerusalem, first in the Shaarei_Chesed neighborhood and later in a purpose-built building in Tel Arza.

On the fourth of Cheshvan, 5726, 70 minutes before Shabbos, his neshama entered a yom shekulo tov .

Posthumously, he was known as an "ענק שבענקים" (a giant amongst giants), and a "גאון שבגאונים" (a genius amongst geniuses.)

המצוד אחר "גדול התלמודיסטים בעולם"

אחת העיירות הראשונות שנפלו בקלות בידי הגרמנים הארורים היתה טשעבין. זכתה עיר זו ובה שכן אורו של הגאון האדיר שר התורה מטשעבין, הגה"ק רבי דב בעריש ויידנפלד זצ"ל שממקום שבתו בעיירה בקע אורו על פני עולם ומלואו.

לב כולם נתמלא בחרדה מפני הבאות שכן הגרמנים לא הדרו פני איש ולא חסו על זקן וצעיר. מיד עם בואם לעיר, כמו בכל מקום ברחבי פולין שנכבש על ידם, זרעו הגרמנים מהומה ומבוכה וחוללו שמות. הרשעים רצחו וחמסו, התעללו והתהוללו, וזעקת יהודי העיר עלתה עד לשמים.

אל הרב הובא פיסת עיתון "שטירמר" מנואץ, בו נראית דמות דיוקנו של הרב מטשעבין תחת הכיתוב "גדול התלמודיסטים בעולם", והגרמנים מבטיחים כי בהגיעם לפולין יתפסו את הרבנים של היהודים מגור ומבעלז ובאבוב יחד עם הרב ו"יסגרו עימם חשבון"... בפלס הגיונו המחושב תיכנן הגאון את צעדיו והחליט לעזוב מיד את העיר, כשהוא מצווה על כל מי שיכול לצאת לדרך לעזוב את טשעבין ולברוח לכיוון הגבול הרוסי. הוא נטל עימו את כתביו היקרים לו מכל וארזם במזוודה קטנה, לקח את רעייתו הרבנית ואת בתו הצעירה ויצא לדרך הנדודים הארוכה והקשה. ימים ולילות רצופים נתמשכה דרך הבריחה, וכשהגיעו ימי ראש השנה, ציוה הגאון להמשיך ולא לעצור. למען האמת, הצליח הגאון לברוח ממש ברגע האחרון, שכן במהלך חודש תשרי ת"ש, השלימו הגרמנים את אחיזת החנק בפולין וניתקו כליל את כל הדרכים ממנה ואליה, אין יוצא ואין בא.

על אם הדרך, בעיצומו של ראש השנה, נפגש הגאון בעגלתו של הרבי מאמשינוב הרה"ק רבי שמעון שלום זצ"ל. כמה קשה לנו לדמיין לעצמנו את הני תרי צדיקי עולם, גאון עולם מטשעבין וקדוש עליון הרבי מאמשינוב, כשהם יושבים כל אחד על עגלתו בעיצומו של יום הדין, ראש השנה, והם מתדיינים חרישית ביניהם אודות המצב. לאחר שיחה של מספר רגעים נפרדו לשלום והמשיכו כל אחד במסעו המואץ. לימים סיפר הרבי מאמשינוב זצ"ל, שליבו היה נוקפו שעושה הוא את החג לחול בבורחו מפני אימת המציק, ואף שהיה נהיר ומחוור שאין מנוס מכך עקב פיקוח נפש, אך עדיין העיקה עליו ההרגשה הכבדה על חילול החג, ורק כשראה כי גם גאון עולם מטשעבין נהג בדיוק כך והמשיך בבריחה בעיצומו של ראש השנה, הבין נכוחה כי אכן אין מנוס וחובה לנהוג כך מצד הדין.

הגאון מטשעבין המשיך במנוסתו עד שהגיעה ללמברג הגדולה, שהיתה מוצפת ברבבות פליטים וכל אחד מחפש לעצמו קורת גג. הרה"ק רבי מנחם נחום'וניו מהוסיאטין-לבוב זצ"ל הי"ד, שהתגורר בעיר, פינה עבור הרב מטשעבין את עזרת הנשים של בית מדרשו והזמינו להתגורר שם. כמובן שמיד הפך המקום להיות אבן שואבת, הרב החל למסור שיעורים כסדרן בעיצומם של ימי הסער והסופה, ורבים צבאו על דלתותיו בשאלות דחופות מעניני השעה, והגאון אף המשיך במתן תשובות לשאלות ממקומות מרוחקים, שנדפסו מאוחר יותר בספרו הגדול דובב מישרים.

הרוסים, שליטי העיר, החליטו ביום בהיר לגרש את כל הפליטים שהצטופפו בלמברג אל תוך הארץ ואל סיביר המרוחקת, ואף כי נראה היה תחילה שמדובר בגזירה קשה מנשוא, הנה כי כן היתה להם נפשם לשלל ורוב המגורשים לסיביר ניצלו ממוות בטוח, בעוד שהנותרים בלבוב נפלו בידי הגרמנים שחזרו וכבשו את למברג כעבור מספר חדשים ושלחו את כל יהודיה למחנות המוות הי"ד. כך נגזר על הגאון האדיר מטשעבין ללכת לגולת מרחקים ונפשו עונתה בכפור הסיבירי ובמצוקות הרעב והקור, אך גם אלה לא יכלו לרוח הגדולה שהותירה ה' לטובה להחיות עם רב אחרי המלחמה.
