The wise Rabbi and wonderful preacher

Our master Rabbi Shmuel of blessed memory

Son of the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Yosef Pollak of blessed memory

Who stood on the watch of the rabbinate for twenty five years

In our community, he promulgated Torah and raised up students, he inclined

His shoulder to teach them the path of faith and became for them like eyes

He sought the peace of the congregation and did justice

A teacher of righteousness and justice in the sweetest of languages

And he found pleasure and honour one hundredfold

He loved the Torah of kindness and enlightening the eyes

For many he was a model for old men and boys

Samuel died aged sixty four years on the twentieth day,

of Elul 5666 and all the community and the entire province gathered

And they mourned him with a lament for the multitude of his deeds, and his walking with integrity
