BOSSIER CITY, LA - Ray M. Hilburn died after a long illness Thursday, October 11, 2007 at the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in Bossier City. Mr. Hilburn was born on October 11, 1918 in Plain Dealing, Louisiana and except for various tours with the U.S. Air Force was a life long resident of Bossier Parish.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 14, 2007 from 5-8 PM at Rose-Neath Funeral in Bossier City. Services will be conducted by his nephew Dr. Glenn Hilburn retired Chairman of the Department of Religion at Baylor University and Rev. Bill Eisle Assistant Pastor of Waller Baptist Church at 11:30 AM Monday, October 15, 2007 at Rose-Neath's Chapel on Airline Drive in Bossier City. Burial will follow at Hill Crest Memorial Cemetery in Haughton. Military honors will be provided by the color guard from Barksdale AFB.
He was preceded in death by his parents Yancy M. Hilburn and Lillie McKenzie Hilburn, sisters Amy Haynes, Virgie Matlock, Charlene Cox and Delores Wilson, half brothers Guy Hilburn, Ollie Hilburn and Danzie Hilburn and half sisters Eula Martin, Turrelle Martin and Effie Jones.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years Bessie Malone Hilburn, son Michael Ray Hilburn and wife Susan, daughter Peggy Hilburn Moore and husband Loy, grandchildren David A. Hilburn and Jeff L. Hilburn of Houston, John Michael Moore of Bossier City, Susan Moore Feibel of Shreveport, step granddaughter Arlene Thornton of Shreveport, 5 great grandchildren Zachary, Courtney, and Joshua Hilburn of Houston, TX, Peyton Beene and Hudson Keith Moore of Bossier City, 3 step great grandchildren Brittney, Justin and Lauren Thornton and brother Yancy M. Hilburn of Corpus Christi, TX.
Mr. Hilburn joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in February 1937 and served in the South Pacific area of combat during World War II. He most proudly served in the liberation of Guadalcanal in 1942 and with the 339th Fighter Squadron that performed the mission that shot down Japanese Admiral Yamamoto in 1943. After World War II he served at various bases in the United States prior to his retirement at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant in 1960. After retirement from active duty he worked in a civilian capacity for the 917th Reserve Wing at Barksdale and for the Northwest Louisiana Children's Home.
Mr. Hilburn was an active member and Deacon of Waller Baptist Church in Bossier City and during hi life took great pleasure in his family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were a joy in his life.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Waller Baptist Church.
The family would like to express their thanks to the caring staff of Garden Court Nursing Home and the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home and Odyssey Hospice. The family requests that donations be made to Waller Baptist Church, the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home or the charity of the donors choice.
