About Rebecca Brewster "Becky" Irving, B.S.

  • Rebecca's birth, photograph and death information are available in her obituary at https://www.chadwickfuneralservice.com/obituary/rebecca-irving, which is provided below, as well:
    • "Rebecca (Becky) Brewster Irving passed away on August 7, 2021, just 10 days shy of her 101st birthday. Becky was born on August 17, 1920 to Frederick Carpenter and Mary (Chapman) Irving and attended Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill, MA, graduating in 1939. She received an Associate in Science Degree from Colby Junior College in New London, NH in 1942 and a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1943. In 1975, she received a second Bachelor of Science Degree from Colby Sawyer College. Becky was an Emeritus Member of the American Society of Medical Technologists and was active in the Alumni Association at Colby Sawyer College.
    • "After completing her education as a Medical Technologist, Becky worked in Brookline and Needham and then Norwell, MA. During World War II, she spent time in the Dominican Republic training local medical personnel on how to perform laboratory tests for malaria in anticipation of the war reaching those malaria prone regions.
    • "She moved to New London, NH in 1954 when she was hired to teach Medical Technology at Colby Junior College. Soon she became in charge of the entire Medical Technology program, a program that grew to be nationally recognized as one of the best in the country. As a mentor for her students, she created innovative and unique medical technology courses and strove to ensure that her Med Tech students also took courses in the Liberal Arts to give them a more rounded education and exposure to areas other than science. Hospitals knew that when they hired a Med. Tech. educated at Colby Junior College they would have a professional, knowledgeable and dependable technologist working in their laboratories. Becky led the Medical Technology program at Colby Junior until her retirement in 1982, impacting the careers and thus, lives, of scores of Medical Technology students, many of whom remained friendly with her throughout her lifetime. In 2016, 34 years after retirement, Colby Sawyer College awarded her an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree in recognition of the positive, far-reaching consequences her life’s work brought to the school and its graduates.
    • "Becky, an avid sailor, adored her Herreshoff sloop, Dovekey which had Sunapee Lake as its home. She also loved traveling the world. An able handyman, she enjoyed building structures that she designed. Often, she would help storeowners and residents around New London by repairing their wooden fences and restoring railings consistent with period styles. For many years Becky volunteered at the New London Public Library performing helpful and often ingenious tasks. Becky was also the founder and director of the BJ Baker Memorial Laboratory Fund at the New London Hospital. Her Third-Year students regularly ran fund raisers for the Fund, which was established in memory of a former Medical Technology student.
    • "Becky was athletic, independent, thoughtful, funny and always gracious. Her quick wit, wisdom, advice and wonderful stories of life and lessons learned will be sorely missed. She has left a tremendous legacy for us all, and she and her stories will certainly never be forgotten.
    • "Becky is survived by her brother, Colin Irving of Alamogordo, NM and five nieces and six nephews. She was predeceased by her long-time friend and traveling companion, Nancy Draper, her parents, Frederick C. and Mary Irving, her sisters Mary and Frances and brother Frederick, Jr.
    • "There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held on September 8, 2021 at West Part Cemetery, New London, NH at 11 am, with The Reverend Barbara Cavin, a former Medical Technology student, presiding. If you have a favorite memory of Becky, please be sure to bring it with you to share.
    • "In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to BJ Baker Memorial Laboratory at New London Hospital, 273 County Road, New London, NH 03257."
