US Congressman. After relocating to Shoreham, Vermont in 1787, he worked on the family farm until marrying at age 20. Rich later owned his own farm and became successful in other endeavors, including a general store.
He served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1800 to 1811, and also served for six years as Addison County Judge. He was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican in 1812, serving one term. In 1816 he was again elected to Congress, and was reelected three times. Rich became ill after working on his farm outdoors in bad weather for several consecutive days and the illness claimed his life just a few months after the completion of final House term.
