

Herbert Johns was born at Ōamaru in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island on 21 May 1892 (reg. 1892/7843). He was the son of George Albert Johns and Clara Amelia Johns (née Martin) who were both born in Cornwall, England, but had married in Dunedin, New Zealand on 7 August 1891. During World War I Herbert served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 4th Battalion. He was killed in action at the Somme on 18 December 1916. 24-year-old Herbert was buried in the Y Farm Military Cemetery [ K. 9.]. Bio by Debbie McCauley (8 August 2024).
