Real Grave site of Richard Pounder

Richard Pounder is not buried at the Pounders Cemetery. His true burial site is unknown. The pictured military marker was placed in the Pounders Cemetery by Mae Lee Pounders as a memorial to her great great-great grandfather. Details were published on page 3-A of the FRANKLIN COUNTY TIMES, Russellville, Alabama on Wednesday, April 4, 1979. I spoke with Mae Lee Pounders a couple of times and she said that she did not know where Richard was buried. Mae Lee believed he died and was buried somewhere in Tennessee. Ceyburn Pounders

Fought for the Revolutionary War 5th Maryland Regiment of Capt. Levin Handy, A Corporal 12/6/1776-4/1/1777 and then 4/1/1779-8/16/1780 when he was reported missing.

GEDCOM Note

Early records give the surname as POUNDER but after 1800 it is listed as POUNDERS. 1758 to 1803 New Jersey tax records list the following people with the POUNDER surname; Asher, James, John, Samuel, and Thomas. Richard had sons named James, Samuel, and Thomas; so it is possible the New Jersey POUNDER group are related to Richard. Richard appears on the muster roll of the 5th Maryland Regiment of Capt. Levin Handy, commanded by Col. W. Richardson, 8 Sep 1778. It shows Richard served as a Corporal from 6 Dec 1776 until 1 Apr 1777 and then from 1 Apr 1779 to 16 Aug 1780 when he was reported missing. It seems he didn't wait for his discharge from the Colonial Army. At least one source lists Richard's middle name as John. This same source lists his father as William Pounders born in England.
